CHAPTER 25

Annoyed, John turned around, swinging the back of his hand, slapping into the pirate’s head before he even finished his sentence. With a pop, the rune armor the man wore exploded, showering the other pirates in twisted metal and vaporized blood. With a glare that caused all of them to cower, John addressed the stunned raiders.

“I’m in the middle of a trade,” he said, “so kindly butt out until I’m done.”

His attack had happened so quickly no one had actually seen it, but it was clear from the way he was standing that he was the one who had obliterated their leader. One of the brighter raiders turned and bolted, rushing back through the door into the central area, as John, casually disregarding the others, turned to speak to the auctioneer again.

“What do you say? This for those two items.”

Looking at John’s smile, the auctioneer became painfully aware this was not a trade he could refuse and dumbly nodded his head, accepting the practically priceless piece of metal, and John reached for the two boxes he had traded for. Both were enchanted heavily, and the auctioneer was about to warn John of the danger of opening them when his fingers flared with blue flame and the enchantments simply melted away. Reaching straight through the boxes, he picked up the two items, examining them closely. The earth elemental stone was beyond heavy, causing John to nearly drop it, and contained such a dense sense of earth that John felt as if he was holding an entire world in his hand. The root, on the other hand, looked completely normal but burst with such an intense life force that John could feel his hair starting to grow. Wrapping both of them in his mana, he put them in his pouch and nodded to the auctioneer.

“Thank you,” he said. “Pleasure doing business.”

Turning around, he was about to return to Ellie when his expression froze, a clear feeling of danger appearing in his heart. Slowly, his eyes turned skyward, as if he could see straight through the ceiling. Uray was here. Uray Lotheric, the supreme Mage, had appeared. John knew it. Torn between wanting to return to Ellie to make sure she was safe and immediately rushing out to fight against the supreme Mage, John hesitated for a moment. In that moment, his decision was made for him. There was a flicker of energy, and through his ring, John heard Ellie’s voice.

“John!”

Whatever she was going to say was cut off, as a familiar feeling of teleportation was transmitted through the ring. Without hesitating, John burst through the door and shot toward the box where he and Ellie had been sitting. There, he found a few raiders looking at the giant piles of stuff he and Ellie had won from the auction. Ellie, Qwell, and Isla were all gone, teleported away by some sort of safety mechanism hopefully.

If anything happens to her, John stopped his thought halfway, knowing it wouldn’t lead anywhere good. Swiftly, his senses sank into his ring, hoping to find where Ellie had gone.
